I have a hard time remembering Robert Altman’s 1970 movie M*A*S*H as the subsequent very long-running TV series sticks in my memory more powerfully.

I do remember seeing the movie after the TV show had been around for years, and I had difficulty adjusting to its much harder edge, and Altman’s signature episodic style. Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould play cynical doctors on the front line during the Korean war. Bored between sudden spurts of dealing with wounded soldiers, they drink, smoke and take out their frustrations by tormenting senior nurse “Hotlips”, amongst others.

It was a hugely successful and influential black comedy when released, but very much a product of its time (this when the Vietnam war was at its height).  Altman apparently hated the much softer subsequent TV series.

This is the French ‘grande’ version of the poster. It is for sale here.
