The Parallax View is possibly the most paranoid of a small wave of paranoid thrillers from the 70s.

Several of these (including Klute and All The President’s Men) were also directed by Alan J Pakula.

Here, Warren Beatty stars as a crusading journalist who comes to realise that all witnesses a political assassination are steadily being killed by the mysterious Parallax Corporation, which turns out to be a recruitment centre for assassins.

The movie has obvious echoes of the Kennedy assassination, especially in the solemn pronouncements from the investigating committee which bookend the film (“This is an announcement, not a press conference. Therefore, there will be no questions.”)

Beatty’s character is inevitably set up to be the ‘patsy’ for the killing of a presidential candidate and, suffice to say, it doesn’t end up well for him.
