Madonna’s leading role debut is still for me the high-point of her acting career.

Given she essentially plays herself in this movie, the role perhaps wasn’t too much of a stretch for her. She is out-acted anyway by Rosanna Arquette (one of those 80s stars who burned brightly for awhile then pretty much disappeared) in the lead.  I actually don’t remember a whole lot in detail of this movie, although strangely I do recall there is a scene where Madonna dries her armpit hair on a bath-room hand dryer at a club! The movie captures the 80s NYC new wave scene rather well, and is also notable for bringing us Madonna’s hit “Into The Groove.”

The less said about Madonna’s subsequent forays into acting (hello Shanghai Surprise, Body Of Evidence, Swept Away), probably the better. I also was not a huge fan of her performance in Evita, although that one did net her a Golden Globe award.

I have however been fortunate enough to see her in concert 3 times – at Wembley Stadium and Singapore (both about half a mile from the stage), and lastly in Paris on her recent more intimate Madame X theatre tour. That one was particularly memorable, albeit clouded by the fact that my wife and I both contracted Covid from the trip and subsequently were forced to spend a month in bed!
