These poster magazines became quite a thing for movie buffs in the UK in the 70s.

I have already posted on my collection of Monster Mag, which folded out to reveal a huge, and usually gory, movie still. Not to be outdone, these rival themed horror poster mags promised ‘two giant posters inside.” In its short run, Legend Horror Classics started out including comic strips of various movies, but by the time of these special issues, it had become very much a Monster Mag clone. As with Monster Mag, the writing was never up to much, it was all about the images.

Around the same time, I also picked up the rather random selection of poster mags in the second photo. The King Kong and Man With The Golden Gun magazines both folded out to reveal a copy of the movie poster. I do remember having some of these pinned up on my bedroom wall for awhile. I did not realise it at the time, but this was where my interest in collecting the original posters perhaps originated.

I do not know why I bought the King Kong mag as I remember even at the time thinking the remake was truly terrible. However, the poster does feature a very powerful (and in retrospect rather poignant) poster image of Kong atop the World Trade Centre twin towers being attacked by aircraft.

These poster magazines have over time become quite collectible. I have recently seen original copies offered for £50+. My copies have been gathering dust in a chest at my mother’s house for the past 40-odd years, so I will likely sell them off in due course.
