This is another rare poster I own for a film I have never seen.

I am not a sci-fi nerd in the same way that I love say Hammer horror, but I thought this poster was unique enough that it merited getting it framed. This is an Australian ‘day bill’ (almost the same size as a US one-sheet) for this 1957 movie.  I bought the poster because I think it is a very cool 50s era sci-fi image (robot!- check, rockets! – check, sensationalist headline! – check).

“Robby the Robot” had previously featured in the better-known film Forbidden Planet (itself a very loose interpretation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, set in space and starring a very young Leslie Nielsen, pre Naked Guns). After that became a hit, the studio essentially re-used the robot suit for this movie, which isn’t a sequel as such, but Robby was popular enough to get his own billing. (Is this the only example of a robot being billed above the human cast, I wonder?)

This is a great 3 color poster, based on a  full-colour US original, but I actually prefer this version as I think its bolder and more iconic. I am not sure if this is for the original Australian release or not, but I think this is another very rare poster as I have been unable to find the same image anywhere online.
