1935’s Werewolf Of London has the distinction of being the world’s very first full-length werewolf movie.
Strangely, it never came up on TV when I was a kid in the 70s, when I saw most of the Universal horrors from the period, so I have never seen it.
It was originally intended to star Boris Karloff, but was shot at the same time as Bride Of Frankenstein, so Karloff was unavailable. Instead, Henry Hull plays the lead. It does, though, share a makeup artist with Karloff’s monster – with effects created by the great Jack Pierce – although allegedly the design was scaled back at Hull’s insistence because he did not want his face fully obscured by make-up.
I have no idea as to exactly how old this original still is of Hull and fellow werewolf Warner Oland duking it out, but I am guessing it dates from the 50s, at least. This is for sale here.
