Its not very fashionable to plug Woody Allen these days, for entirely understandable reasons. (Quite apart from most of his recent efforts being awful).

But its worth remembering back in the day he did deliver a number of classics, not least 1979’s Manhattan. Its a romantic comedy, but also a love letter to Allen’s beloved New York City, featuring music by George Gershwin.

It is somewhat weird in retrospect given real life events that Allen stars as a 40-something comedy writer who dates a teenage girl – something which did not apparently attract any controversy at the time!

Oddly, Allen was at the time very unhappy with the finished movie and offered to make a second film for no fee if the studio would agree not to release it. Wisely, they demurred. Allen subsequently picked up a nomination for Best Screenplay for his efforts.

This famous black and white image is the UK quad poster, which I sold last year.
