Film Review (originally ABC Film Review) was a UK movie magazine that I used to buy when visiting my local cinema in the 70s.
It ran from 1950 to 2008, ultimately billing itself as “Britain’s longest-running film magazine.” Because it was tied in to the cinemas themselves, it was not the place to come to look for any kind of critical or intellectual journalism – basically it promoted upcoming films, lifting elements wholesale from their press kits.
I still have a box of these in a drawer at my mother’s house. This photo gives a good idea of the blockbuster (or not) movies that were playing at UK cinemas in 1977. Alongside mainstays such as Bond, Rocky and Kong, its interesting to be reminded of some of the very British rubbish that was released and promoted in this era – notably TV sitcom spin-offs such as Are You Being Served?
