Christmas is coming, but sorry I do not have any festive-themed movie memorabilia to post, so this red and green Godzilla poster will just have to do!
I’ve seen various Godzilla movies over the years (including the rather mediocre recent reboots), but frankly I do not remember if I have ever seen the original 1954 movie. I have posted elsewhere how I am not a huge Godzilla geek, but I think this is the very best of the various posters that were created for the original Godzilla – so when I saw this for sale I just had to snap it up. This French ‘moyenne’ poster from the 50s is a fairly recent addition to my home gallery, and has become one of my favourites.
This is by the French poster artist Andre Poucel (who seems to have produced relatively few movie posters). It just screams “50s sci-fi”, from the bold use of colours to the !!! blurb. The American version of the poster is more valuable, but I prefer this, and it is also highly collectible. Copies of this poster are on sale online for over $1000. Fortunately I paid rather less than that, and it makes for a nice pairing with various others in my collection.
It’s another giant monster classic, along with my African poster for the original King Kong; it reminds me in many ways of my Australian poster for the Robby The Robot movie The Invisible Boy, which has a similar vibe; plus I am displaying it in my office on the same wall as my Curse of the Werewolf French moyenne which is also a litho printing; this is a style and technique I really like!
Merry Christmas 2021 everyone!
