Here are a pair of very old Belgian posters for pivotal movies starring the late, great Ingrid Bergman.
By the time she made 1948’s Joan of Arc, she was already a major Hollywood star, having won an Oscar for Gaslight and appeared opposite Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca, her most famous role. She had also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Notorious, with Cary Grant (another great poster I own, watch this space….)
Joan of Arc was a dream project for her, and she received an Oscar nomination for her performance, although the film was heavily edited for release and was not considered a huge success at the time. This poster with its iconic image of her in armour is from the 1951 re-release. I really like it but as the movie itself does not particularly resonate with me I am putting it up for sale here.
Bergman’s Hollywood career had started with a splash with 1939’s love story Intermezzo, in which she recreated her role from the earlier Swedish version. It became a huge success and she received many positive reviews both for her performance and for her natural appearance (considered a tonic at the time vs more traditional Hollywood definitions of glamour). This poster is the joint oldest one I own (along with The Mummy’s Hand), from the 1946 Belgian release. It needs a bit of TLC but is up for grabs here.
