It is quite remarkable that Fitzcarraldo (a story of one man’s crazy obsession) got made at all.

It is a story of a man determined to drag a steamship over a mountain in Peru.

To film it, director Werner Herzog (himself known as a crazy obsessive) chose to drag a full size steamship over a mountain for real. He also cast the famously combustible Klaus Kinski in the lead after original star Jason Robards was forced to exit due to dysentery having shot 40% of the film.

Herzog had worked with Kinski before, so presumably knew what he was getting, but his star proved to be so truculent and difficult on set that the director considered taking up the local tribespeople on their offer to murder him!

This is the French poster, with artwork by the prolific Jean Mascii, plus a selection from a full set of lobby cards I have. These are all for sale here.
