Scum remains one of the toughest and most disturbing watches of all British movies of the 70s.
A harsh look at the brutal life inside borstals, it was originally planned for TV, but it got banned and was subsequently remade to be released in cinemas. I still remember the scene where a pre-fame Ray Winstone gathers pool balls in a sock and uses them to crack some guy’s head open.
Random info: between Scum and his renaissance as one of Britain’s best-loved actors, my company used Ray Winstone in an ad for fruit juice. He played a cockney gondolier in Venice (don’t ask). Across numerous takes, not once did he manage to remember his 45 seconds’ worth of lines. (I suspect drugs may have been involved).
