This is one of those classic movies which I don’t recall ever seeing.
I’ve certainly read Tennessee Williams’ play, as I studied it at university. He’s undoubtedly one of the all-time great American playwrights.
The movie pairs Elizabeth Taylor as Maggie “the Cat” and Paul Newman as her husband Brick, with Burl Ives as his father Big Daddy – all iconic roles.
Production was halted at one point when Taylor’s husband was tragically killed in a plane crash (on a flight she was supposed to also take). Williams apparently intensely disliked the screenplay, which toned down his original and removed all suggestions of homosexuality. Nonetheless, the movie was a financial success and was nominated for 6 Oscars.
Above is the original Belgian poster, complete with tax stamp. I also have the above terrific still of the leads and a Spanish press book from a 70s re-release. All of these are available for sale here.
