I have no idea if I have ever seen 1981’s Priest Of Love.
However, its subject matter holds some meaning for me as author DH Lawrence came from my home town and was one of the most famous alumni of the school I attended. (It was said he got expelled, but I am not sure if that is fact or myth).
Lawrence was the author of, among others, Sons and Lovers, Women In Love and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. His vivid descriptions of sex caused no small level of scandal in the 20s Lady Chatterley was the subject of a court case, and got banned for obscenity in many markets.
The movie features a relatively early lead performance by then-unknown Ian McKellen as Lawrence, and the supporting cast is a who’s-who of British character actors from the era.
This poster interestingly contrasts photos of the historical figures with the actors who play them in the movie. This is for sale here.
