Goldfinger is one of the undisputed high points of the James Bond franchise.
The movie includes a bunch of iconic Bond characters and moments – henchman Oddjob and his murderous metal bowler hat, Bond’s silver tricked-out Aston Martin DB5 and, perhaps most famous of all, Shirley Eaton’s cameo as the unfortunate Bond girl who is killed by having her entire body covered with gold paint, as immortalised in the still here.
Gert Frobe as Auric Goldfinger is also one of the most memorable villains in the entire series. The scene where he straps down Sean Connery’s Bond and sets an industrial laser to work between his legs also contains the famous exchange: “Do you expect me to talk?” “No, Mr Bond, I expect you to die!” He is pictured here in the climactic fight with Bond – shortly before being sucked out a depressurised airplane cabin!
The Goldfinger US one-sheet poster featured here was one I bought at a poster fair in London, and at the time I wasn’t sure if it was an original or not. A subsequent search revealed its a reprint from the 1980s – many of the earlier Bond posters got reprinted then. For this one, aside from some minor differences in print quality, the big giveaway is that curiously the title Goldfinger is not in parentheses, which it was on the original version. Luckily I did not pay too much for it!
UPDATE: I recently acquired an original version from 1964 for the same poster above. This was part of a large lot early 60s US one-sheets. Most of these are for obscure movies, but there are several very valuable posters included, most notably this one. I could I guess swap out my framed 80s version for this, but honestly I do not love this poster enough to keep it, considering its very high value. So I will probably put it up for auction shortly and use the proceeds to buy something I like more!
