This is one of those classics where pretty much everyone knows one tune and sequence, even if (like me) their memories of the whole movie are hazy.
Star Gene Kelly was also choreographer for this 1952 musical romantic comedy. It is set in late 20s Hollywood, just as cinema was transitioning from silents to talkies. Most of the songs are from that era.
It did ok business when released, but has since been revered as the greatest movie musical ever.
Kelly’s iconic joyful dance in the pouring rain (shot when he was sick with a high fever) has also been much parodied. (I remember British TV comedians Morecombe and Wise doing a great version of it).
This is the French soundtrack album, which we bought on a whim a few years ago and have barely played since!
