Dr Terror was the first of Amicus’ studios portmanteau horror movies.
These were based on the format of Ealing Studios’ classic Dead Of Night. They all began with a tenuous linking device to bring together a disparate group of people, which would then lead into individual short stories told by or about each person, and a ‘shock’ ending.
In this case, a group of passengers in a railway carriage opt to have their cards read by the mysterious title character (Peter Cushing), and subsequently all find themselves disembarking at the final stop – Hell.
The characters and stories here include Christopher Lee being menaced by a severed hand and Donald Sutherland discovering he has married a vampire. There’s also a comical story featuring Roy Castle.
The success of Dr Terror led to many more Amicus productions in a similar vein, notably Tales From The Crypt and Asylum.
This is a Spanish herald (flyer), which is now on my wall as part of a 50s/60s horror/sci-fi collection.
