I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen this iconic Steve McQueen movie. If I have, I remember nothing of it.
McQueen was a renowned petrol-head, and having done many of his own driving stunts in Bullitt, having him star in a movie about the famous 24-hour race seems like a natural fit. For added realism, parts of the movie were filmed at the circuit during the actual 1970 Le Mans race.
The French ‘moyenne’ poster for Le Mans, with great art by Rene Ferracci, is hugely collectible and consequently hugely expensive.
I was lucky enough to pick this one up for a song and considered keeping and framing it. But having weighted this against my unfamiliarity with the movie and the opportunity to make a big profit I eventually sold it at auction.
The set of Spanish lobby cards I had also sold quickly. So now I am ‘Le Mans-less’ in terms of memorabilia items.
Given I’m living in France now, I do hope however to be able to go see the actual race myself someday….!
