Philip Kaufman’s 1978 version of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is one of those rare instances where the remake is arguably better than the original movie.
Don Siegel’s version is a deserved classic of 50s paranoia sci-fi, justly remembered in particular for its ending, as the hero stands on a freeway shouting to no avail at passing traffic “you’re next!”. Kaufman’s film has a different but similarly bleak and memorable ending.
The movie relocates the action from a mid-west small town to San Francisco but keeps the core idea of people being replaced while they sleep by doubles ‘birthed’ from giant pods.
Added is Donald Sutherland sporting a fierce 70s perm and the neat idea of having the duplicates’ let out a blood-curdling shriek when they see a human.
