Theatre Of Blood is my all-time favourite horror comedy and my favourite Vincent Price movie by a mile.
The movie has a delightfully vicious premise. Price (so often over the top) is perfect as the hammy stage actor humiliated after being denied a best actor gong by the Critic’s Circle. Presumed dead from suicide, he takes his revenge by tormenting and murdering them one by one in inventive ways inspired by the murder scenes in Shakespeare’s plays.
So, for example, Robert Morley is the ‘queen’ who is forced to eat her babies (in this case, pet dogs) baked in a pie (a la Titus Andronicus).
It manages to combine some nasty gory moments with a lot of tongue-in-cheek humour. Co-star (playing Price’s daughter) also has a lot of fun as the duo don a variety of outrageous disguises to carry out their plot.
