“I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this any more.” If you remember nothing else of Network, you probably remember that line.
Sidney Lumet’s 1976 classic satire is perhaps still the greatest movie ever made about television. Peter Finch’s unhinged TV newscaster is about to be fired, and announces he intends to commit suicide on live TV. From there, the station suits, led by a scheming Faye Dunaway, step in to exploit him for ratings as a “mad prophet”, before eventually tiring of him and deciding to have him killed off live on air.
The movie won acting Oscars for both Finch (posthumously – the first time this happened) and Dunaway. Paddy Chayefsky’s clever script also won Best Original Screenplay.
