I saw The Breakfast Club with low expectations when reviewing movies for my student newspaper. It turned out to be one of the classic teen movies of the 80s. It is my favourite from the late director John Hughes, who also gave us teen classics Ferris Bueller and Pretty In Pink, amongst many more. These are both stills I picked up at the press screening.
This is perhaps the archetypal ‘Brat Pack’ movie. It’s about a group of teens, seemingly with little in common, who bond during weekend morning detention. It features a great cast, including Emilio Estevez, plus Judd Nelson, Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald and Ali Sheedy (who all have since seemingly joined the ‘where are they now’ club). The iconic group pose still featured here was shot by the renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, no less, and was featured on the poster.
The movie also gave Scottish rock band Simple Minds a #1 with the song Don’t You Forget About Me, which plays over the end credits. It’s a song the band didn’t write and apparently didn’t particularly want to record, but it went to to become by far their biggest hit.
