I am not sure but I do not believe I have ever seen Eyes Without A Face.
This 1960 movie was realised by French director Georges Franju, a former documentary film-maker. The plot concerns a plastic surgeon who is obsessed with performing a face transplant upon his daughter, who has been badly disfigured in a car crash. It has become an iconic horror movie, but was notorious upon release, particularly for a very graphic skin grafting scene.
Eyes Without A Face was one of a few horror movies from the same period made by “serious” directors. (Others would include Peeping Tom by Michael Powell and Hitchcock’s Psycho). All were received very negatively by critics at the time (Peeping Tom ended Powell’s career), but have since been reappraised as classics.
It has also became very influential. The blank, featureless mask the daughter wears inspired John Carpenter for the depiction of the knife-wielding killer Michael Myers in Halloween. Pedro Almodovar also paid direct homage with The Skin I live In (which added an additional, somewhat outrageous twist to the concept….) Eyes Without A Face also went on to give Billy Idol, no less, a top 10 hit with his song of the same title.
