This is a pair of Belgian posters for two of the series of loose Edgar Allen Poe adaptations that legendary producer Roger Corman directed in the 60s.
These followed on the success of Corman’s House Of Usher adaptation for American International Pictures. All starred Vincent Price, who is the one in the cowl in The Pit, with the exception of The Premature Burial, which featured Ray Milland.
They weren’t particularly scary or gory, and I never liked them as much as the Hammer films of the period, but they do have a certain brooding style about them that is in keeping with the spirit of Poe’s original stories – somewhat surprisingly as Corman was and still is primarily known for making ultra-cheap exploitation movies.
I’ve never got around to getting these posters framed, but I might do so as they display nicely together. Now I just need to find a suitable bit of wall space! These are the small Belgian horizontal format and, like many of the other Belgian posters from that era, reprints abound. I believe these are originals, but that is largely based on the length of time I have owned them – without the tax stamps that were affixed to Belgian posters that were used in cinemas it is very hard to be sure.
I also have the above Spanish herald for The Pit And The Pendulum. This is for sale here.
