Here’s two Belgian posters for films in Hammer’s Mummy series.
The original Mummy is supposed to be as something of a classic but my memory of it is that it was painfully slow and rather dull, notwithstanding it being one of the relatively few Hammer films to star both Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. My memory of The Mummy’s Shroud is even vaguer, although I am pretty sure I saw it on late night TV. It did however make for a good comic strip in the House of Hammer magazine, below.
In fact, the only Hammer Mummy film I really liked is a later one – Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb, which features 70s icon Valerie Leon (she was also the Hi-Karate girl, which won’t mean anything to anyone non-British and below a certain age), as both an Egyptian queen and her modern-day doppelgänger. I recall about half the cast ended up having their throats ripped out by an ancient curse. Sadly, I don’t own the poster for that one, but these Belgian items are very collectible and display nicely.
I have 6 Belgian posters for various Hammer films, which I have displayed together in a corridor. There’s lots of reprints around for these, so it pays to be cautious when buying (and beware any that have ‘printed in Belgium’ in English at the margins, as these will definitely be reprints).
I believe these are both originals, but there’s no real easy way to tell, unless you buy a poster with an original tax stamp stuck on the corner (which actually looks like an ugly postage stamp). These prove authenticity, but rather spoil the image, so its a toss-up. The Mummy is from the first re-release, though (the Warners distributor logo gives it away – for the original release it was distributed by Universal).
