This poster is in rather tatty condition, but for once that rather fits with the aesthetic of the film!
Oddball director Alex Cox was riffing off the success of his earlier cult hit Repoman and desperately wanted to call his Sid Vicious romance drama Love Kills but the distributors insisted on the rather more commercially obvious Sid & Nancy.
The movie features a great early performance by Gary Oldman as the late Sid. I saw this in the cinema when it came out, and don’t remember a whole lot else about it, other than there is a rather cool dream-like sequence where rubbish rains down on the lovers in slow motion as they walk down a street.
Cox’ career subsequently went off the rails with progressively weirder/near-unwatchable offerings, starting with the very strange flop Walker. I last remember seeing him hosting Moviedrome, a great series of late night screenings of influential cult movies on the BBC.
The UK quad poster nicely riffs off the day-glo design for the Sex Pistols’ iconic punk album cover Never mind the bollocks… I think I ripped this down from a wall it had been posted on, like a true punk (!) – hence the many tears.
